Genres Aside, I'm A People Photographer

Photography talk by Craig Boehman.

2019 Mumbai. Worli Koliwada residents.

There is something attractive about the human condition, no matter what kind of person or photographer one may be. Introvert, extrovert - doesn't matter. Documentary, boudoire - all sides of the same coin. I truly believe this.

Looking at people, seeing what they're up to, what they're all about, followed by clicking the shutter...fascinating!

I consider my attitudes and beliefs toward humanity and sometimes I'm amazed that I even want to look at and interact with people, let alone photograph them. Where does this bizzare attraction come from? Why do I and so many others love photographing people?

There's an X factor I'm still sussing out. Because at the end of the day, personality, education, and upbringing aside, I sometimes wonder at why I want to do what I do. I would like to think that there's a high horse to be ridden here, some grandiose philosophy that I'm following. But I'm not. I claim no morale high ground for my passion. I'm not trying to save the world (ridiculous) or trying to change people's minds (even more ridiculous). To the best of my knowledge, when it comes to taking pictures of people, I'm on some sort of auto pilot. I just do what I do.

Sometimes, one can't expect to Scooby-Doo a mystery. Some mysteries will remain so despite our desires to uncover who or what is behind it all. Sometimes, it's only what is in front of one's own eyes that really matter at the end of the day. Maybe the image is all we need?
